So many of us aim to be masters of time management. Using your time more efficiently is a great area of opportunity for most of us. There are so many different tips and strategies out there on how to improve time management and productivity. However, just focusing on the best ways to be more productive can sometimes leave you hanging. It’s important to focus on what are the most effective time management techniques to use your time.
Tips for More Effective Time Management:
- Don’t Multitask
When multitasking, you are more likely to make mistakes. By focusing on only one task at any given time, you are going to get it done faster and correctly. When we multitask, we are tempting fate that we will make a mistake. Studies have shown that it is incredibly difficult for humans to multitask so we’re really just dividing our attention between two different tasks. It is much more time efficient to give one project 100% of your attention than two different projects 50% of your attention at a time.
- Take Breaks
Remember to take breaks frequently. Don’t overwork yourself to the point where your work will start to suffer as a result. There is no benefit to working non-stop on a project. In fact, it could be detrimental to a project if you refuse to take any kind of break to clear your mind. By taking breaks, you will reduce stress and be able to work to your highest productivity. Taking breaks and the time to focus on yourself will help you maintain a more effective time management lifestyle.
- Limit Distractions
One of the most effective time management strategies is to limit distractions. Put your phone away and turn off the television. By limiting distractions, you can focus more on any given task at hand and become more effective and productive. Another great tip for limiting distractions is to close down your email application when you are working on your computer. When emails pop up, we become tempted to respond thus taking us away from the task at hand. By just removing that distraction, we can focus on what we have in front of us and respond to emails later.
- 4) Delegate Tasks
It’s incredibly important to ask for help when necessary. By delegating to others, you can get more done at any given time. Utilizing your team can be more effective time management than any other strategy. It’s also a great reminder not to get caught up in something you can’t do. If a task is too hard or outside your expertise, it is incredibly important and efficient to ask for help so you don’t spend too much time trying to figure out how to get it completed.
- Say No
Don’t take on too many tasks at once and over burden yourself. It’s important to make sure your work load is manageable. Saying no isn’t going to be the end of the world. Oftentimes, things can become late or we procrastinate because there is just too much to do. By saying no, we can eliminate some of that extra work and focus on what is most important.
- Treat Yourself
Remember to praise yourself for a job well done. When you are able to complete a project early or if you are able to finish your daily to-do list, remember to give yourself a treat. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Recognizing and rewarding your effective time management will help you in the long run.
- Enjoy Your Free Time
Your free time should be that – free. Don’t try to add additional work during your off time or you are bound to burn out very quickly. Enjoy the free time that you have and try to use that as a reward for hard work. By differentiating between play and work hours, you can have a more effective time management plan.
Effective time management is at your fingertips. So much of being more effective with your time is about knowing the difference between free time and work time. By setting explicit boundaries, you are going to find that work will get done during work hours and the play time will be that much more enjoyable. Focus on the work and tasks at hand and you will become incredibly successful at managing your time.
