SMART Goals (Or How Entrepreneurs Can Use Goals To Get Moving)

Do you make resolutions every year? Resolutions can be great. They can help you change your course of action, or motivate you to do something different. The same is true for goals. SMART goals in particular can help you find the motivation you need.

When you are setting goals you will need to define objectives in measurable and pragmatic terms. Perhaps you will also need to identify how much time and money you will need to reach your goals. First, you need to decide where you want to go. The next step is to decide how you are going to get there. Last, you should decide on how much you are willing to spend for getting there.

As you probably know by know, this blog is about time management and productivity. If there is one kind of person that needs time management the most it’s new entrepreneurs. They have hectic lives, busy days and lots to do. I hope this article will help you set SMART goals that get you going. It’s time to take the leap!

How To Set SMART Goals

The SMART goals system is reliable, solid and easy to use. Each goal must be defined according to these criteria:

  • S – Specific
  • M – Measurable
  • A – Achievable
  • R – Realistic
  • T – Timely

Specific

Your goals need to be concise and concrete. You will need specific goals, goals that are attainable. Instead of “I want to make more money this year”, you’ll want to say “I want to increase my revenue by X%, from X to Y, within the next 12 months.”

Measurable

For goal setting it is super important that your can measure your progress. Are you going to measure progress on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis? You will need to think about how you are going to measure your progress.

Achievable, Realistic

Setting goals that are not doable won’t do you any good. Your goals need to be achievable and realistic. Setting the bar high is okay, just don’t set yourself up for failure.

Timely

Achieving your goals should not be easy – because that means your goals are not big enough. As such, you will need to give yourself a reasonable time frame to complete your goals. It helps to divide large goals into smaller goals. You might be able to complete these sub-goals in shorter amounts of time, which helps you measure your success more easily.

The Golden Rule of Goal Setting

Setting goals doesn’t have to be hard or complicated. With SMART goals you can easily determine your goals and be sure that they are attainable.

It is important to write your goals down. Get them on paper or somewhere digital. The act of recording your goals helps you create commitment towards them. Once you have your SMART goals you can start working on your roadmap towards achieving your goals. Goal setting is a great way to motivate yourself.

Reflect and Review

You might think we are done now, but no. It is important that you take some time to reflect and review on your goals. You should do this as often as you feel it needs to be done. Perhaps you might start with reflecting and reviewing your goals on a monthly basis. You can then adjust if you need to review and reflect more or less.

This helps keep you on track as time flies by.
